 Simple Roman Capital construction and other Capital samples.   
  We will begin with the basic form for constructing beautiful Roman Capitals. This is a good exercise for any level calligrapher. With the Amity Workshop in mind, we will then study several other forms of Capitals.

 SUPPLY LIST:

  •   Grid paper or marker pad 
  •  .01 or .05 micron marker or similar water proof marker 
  •   tracing paper or thin see-thru paper 
  •   mechanical pencil, eraser, ruler (12”)
  •   C2 nib, pen holder, black gouche or water color, water container, bottle with water dropper, 6  part mixing pan, small brush for loading nib. 
  •  If you have one you may bring a 2.4 pilot parallel pen.

Simple Calligraphic Greeting Cards

This workshop will show you how to make simple cards using calligraphy and your own artwork. We will discuss what papers to use and how to correct mistakes. I’ll show you how to deal with the “dreaded white sheet of paper”. You will try several techniques that will create colorful backgrounds. You will learn how to create an alphabet that you can easily use on these cards. Also, I will show you how to adapt various alphabets for your use. Come out and play.
Supply List
  • Envelopes – try to bring all the same size
  • 1 sheet of Arches HP 90# (Before class, cut the arches into 2 strips of 6” x 30”. Then cut them further into 6”x4 ½”. You will have a bunch of small cards to work on. Please bring any extra leftover scraps)
  • Grid paper
  • Drafting Tape
  • Watercolor: basic colors (R, Y, B, G, P, O) — if you don’t have, DON’T go out and buy them
  • Brushes – ½” wide brush and a few #0 to #8 pointed brushes
  • Gouache – colors you like
  • Any gold gouache or inks – this includes Fintec and other brands
  • Walnut Ink
  • Dr. Martin’s Bleed proof White
  • Pointed and Broad edge Nibs (any types) and holders
  • Colored scraps that you made in workshops – with or without lettering
  • Glue – stick or liquid
  • 12” ruler with a metal edge (so you can draw lines without paint running underneath) 
  • 6” ruler or straightedge (if you have one)
  • 2 H Pencil
  • Eraser, white vinyl
  • Hair dryer (we will only need 2-3 total for the class)
Usual Supplies
  • Sheet of plastic to cover your table (get at dollar store if you don’t have)
  • Old toothbrush
  • Clear acrylic stamp blocks any size (if you have them)
  • Paper towels
  • Pigma Micron Pen (01 or larger)
Optional (which means don’t run out and buy all this stuff. If you have and want to bring it GOOD!)

  • Card stock (white and colors)
  • Water spray bottle
  • Gel pens
  • Pearl Ex
  • Any tools or supplies that you have at home and want to try
